Annapolis, MD - Get ready for a cinematic event that challenges the status quo as the Annapolis Film Society presents a screening of Rob Reiner and Dan Partland’s highly-anticipated documentary, "God & Country," distributed by Oscilloscope. Maryland Hall will host this event in The Goldstein Cunitz Film & New Media Center’s Bowen Theater at 7 pm on February 13, 2024. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Acclaimed for films like "A Few Good Men" and "LBJ," Reiner now delves into the world of Christian Nationalism with "God & Country." The documentary critically examines the movement's distortion of both the constitutional republic and Christianity itself. It looks at the implications of Christian Nationalism and how it distorts not only our constitutional republic but Christianity itself.

Featuring prominent Christian thought leaders, God & Country asks this question: What happens when a faith built on love, sacrifice, and forgiveness grows political tentacles, conflating power, money, and belief into hyper-nationalism? The first trailer has already stirred significant attention.

Directed by five-time Emmy nominee Dan Partland, known for "Intervention," the film brings together religious leaders, scholars, journalists, and historians. They collectively highlight the risks posed by merging Christian beliefs with far-right politics. "God & Country" offers a nuanced narrative, challenging viewers to discern the line between faith and politicized ideology.

Rob Reiner's recent tweet emphasizes the urgency of the subject: "Christian Nationalism is a danger to our country and Christianity."

Oscilloscope's Dan Berger praises the film as a "clarion call," effectively communicating a complex issue and its societal implications. He states, "To be clear, Christianity is not the problem, and having one’s faith inform one’s political beliefs is not the problem. The [issue] is the intertwining of a Christian identity with a political identity such that it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The danger to democracy led me to explore this topic, but what I learned in the process is that the threat may even be greater to the church itself."

This screening promises to be an eye opening experience, offering audiences a look at this powerful documentary that promises to ignite conversation and reflection.

Tickets are available at $15 each for Annapolis Film Society members and $20 each for the general public. Tickets can be purchased here.
