Eliza Scanlen (of Little Women) gives a mesmerizing performance as Jem Starling, a 17-year old girl who struggles under the confines of her strict Christian fundamentalist community and her attraction to the Pastor’s son who returns to town. With her masterful directing and writing, filmmaker Laurel Parmet meticulously captures the details and atmosphere of this religious cult-like existence while also portraying the humanity trapped beneath the façade, making this one of the best films that premiered in competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
